Benjani Mwaruwari has called on his players to begin the new season on a strong note when Highlanders F.C. face city rivals Bulawayo Chiefs F.C. at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday.
The Highlanders coach said he wants his side to “start the season with a bang” as they launch their campaign in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League.
Speaking to the media at the Highlanders clubhouse yesterday, Benjani stressed the importance of a positive start and urged Bosso supporters to rally behind the team.
“Playing at Barbourfields is electrifying. If we start well, we play well. Let’s hope we start with a bang,” he said.
“I know the fans will like that energy and they will also give us the energy we need. But in the end it is about making sure the players do the job on the pitch.”
The former Zimbabwe international said preparations for the derby have gone according to plan and praised the commitment shown by his squad.
“Everything has gone well. As a coach it is pleasing to see a team that is willing to fight hard,” he said.
He added that he has been emphasising to the players the significance of the Bulawayo derby.
“Playing against Bulawayo Chiefs is a local derby and I have been talking to the boys so they understand what is at stake. This game is very important for them and the entire Highlanders family. Getting three points would mean a lot to everyone.”
Benjani also highlighted the importance of team bonding after the squad recently travelled to Botswana for a team-building exercise.
“We went to Botswana for team building and we achieved that,” he said.
Highlanders’ technical bench now features several former Bosso figures, with Mkhokheli Dube and Bekithemba Ndlovu assisting Benjani. Malvern Moyo is in charge of the goalkeepers, while Zenzo Moyo serves as team manager.
The club hopes the strong Bosso presence in the technical team will help guide the players in high-pressure matches such as the derby.
Meanwhile, John Nyikadzino, coach of Bulawayo Chiefs F.C., is preparing for the challenge of competing in the top flight.
Chiefs have strengthened their squad with 12 new signings ahead of the season. Experienced defender Elvis Moyo is among the notable arrivals, alongside striker Brian Muza and several other recruits aimed at strengthening key areas of the team.
