A growing number of Zimbabwean social media influencers and public figures are calling for the cancellation of performances by South African artists in Zimbabwe, arguing that it is inappropriate to host entertainers from the neighbouring country while Zimbabweans and other foreign nationals face renewed threats of xenophobic violence in South Africa.

The debate has intensified ahead of the Econet Buddie Beatz concert scheduled for July 5, which will conclude the 18th Econet Victoria Falls Marathon weekend. South African award-winning duo Mafikizolo is billed to headline the event, marking yet another performance in Zimbabwe.

The backlash comes as vigilante groups in South Africa have reportedly issued a June 30 ultimatum demanding that undocumented foreign nationals leave the country. The threats have heightened fears among immigrant communities, including Zimbabweans, Malawians, Mozambicans and Nigerians, amid concerns over a possible resurgence of xenophobic attacks.

Several Zimbabwean influencers have taken to social media urging event organisers to reconsider the inclusion of South African artists, saying the timing sends the wrong message while fellow citizens continue to face hostility across the border.

These include Mai Titi, Lorraine Guyo, Madam Boss, Prophet Jay Israel who have all shared their sentiments on social media.
