Authorities launch manhunt for scammers impersonating Chiwenga

Authorities have initiated a manhunt for individuals masquerading as Vice President Constantino Chiwenga and his spouse, Miniyothabo Baloyi Chiwenga, with the intent to defraud and solicit funds.

In an official statement, Deputy Chief Secretary for Presidential Communications, George Charamba, revealed that the scammers have been operating using phone numbers originating from South Africa and Nigeria to deceive unsuspecting victims.

“The Department of Presidential Communications wishes to inform and warn the public about individuals impersonating or claiming connections with the Office of the Vice President, General Retd CDGN Chiwenga, and his wife, Colonel Miniyothabo Baloyi Chiwenga,” Charamba stated.

“These charlatans are employing various phone numbers, particularly those from South Africa and Nigeria, to contact both nationals and foreigners, often with malevolent intentions aimed at extracting money, services, or personal information.”

Charamba urged anyone who might be targeted to exercise vigilance and verify any communications purporting to come from the Vice President’s Office or from his wife.

“Official correspondence pertaining to the Vice President, his Office, or his family is conducted through proper, official channels, managed by designated personnel,” he emphasised.

In addition, Charamba clarified that the Vice President and his wife are not linked to any “official” X accounts, noting that the government is actively collaborating with telecommunications authorities in the relevant countries.

“Any accounts falsely asserting a connection with them or misrepresenting their views should be disregarded and treated with the utmost caution,” Charamba advised.

“To date, the following numbers have been reported as being used to impersonate the Vice President and his spouse: +234 8083483315, +234 7038120794, and +277 25956982.”

“Relevant government departments are in discussions with telecommunications authorities in Nigeria and South Africa to ensure these criminals are brought to justice.”

“Any incidents of impersonation should be reported immediately to the Zimbabwe Republic Police,” Charamba concluded.
