CONSTITUTION Defenders Forum (CDF) convenor Tendai Biti and organiser Morgan Ncube have been granted US$500 bail each by a Mutare magistrate’s court.
Biti, former Finance minister, and Ncube were arrested two days ago and charged with contravening the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act for allegedly failing to notify the police of a public meeting in Mutare.
They were ordered to surrender their passports and title deeds for his Chisipite residence in Harare, in Biti’s case.
Furthermore, they were prohibited from addressing any political gatherings and must not interfere with state witnesses.
Biti is a fierce critic of the Constitutional Amendment Bill number 3 which seeks to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s presidential term to 2030 and also remove the public vote for the president leaving it to the parliament.
