The race for the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Golden Boot is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent years after the leading contenders strengthened their positions over the weekend.

Ralph Kawondera and Washington Navaya are now tied at the top of the scoring charts with 10 goals each following another productive round of fixtures.

Kawondera maintained his impressive run when he scored in Herentals’ 2-1 victory over CAPS United at Rufaro Stadium on Saturday. The goal took the veteran captain into double figures and kept him among the league’s most influential performers this season.

Navaya quickly matched that tally a day later, netting in Hardrock’s emphatic 4-0 triumph over ZPC Kariba at Chahwanda Stadium. The reigning Golden Boot winner struck twice in the encounter to move level with Kawondera.

The chasing pack remains within touching distance. Frank Agyemang continued his impressive debut season with Dynamos by scoring his ninth goal in a 1-1 draw against Highlanders FC.

Meanwhile, former Zimbabwe international Khama Billiat increased his tally to eight goals after finding the net in Scottland’s 2-0 victory over Ngezi Platinum Stars. Veteran striker Knowledge Musona is also firmly in the hunt with seven goals following a recent scoring surge.

With 15 rounds of matches still remaining, the battle for the league’s top scorer award appears wide open.

Kawondera, who will celebrate his 36th birthday in August, believes he can continue contributing despite his advancing years.

“I am happy I have now reached double figures,” he told Zimpapers Sports Hub yesterday.

“I think my previous best was 12 goals in 2018 (at Triangle), and now it looks like I may be able to surpass it.

“But for me, the team comes first. I always play for the team, and scoring these goals is one way that I am contributing to the Herentals’ success.

“So, I would like to thank my teammates, especially Honourable (Innocent) Benza, because they have all been there for me always.

“Without these guys, it was going to be difficult to be talking about this topic at the moment. So, we hope to continue playing as a team and taking each game as it comes. It’s not about individual glory,” said Kawondera.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Kawondera’s season has been his versatility. Throughout his career he has featured in several positions, including centre-back, defensive midfield and striker, depending on what his team requires.

“I think my experience has helped me a lot to adapt to different positions. I have played football at the top level for about 15 years, and I have featured regularly in all these positions for the teams I played for,” said Kawondera.

Herentals coach Paul Benza praised the veteran’s contribution after the club climbed to third place on the league table with 33 points, seven behind leaders Scottland FC.

“We are all excited with the form he is showing. Nothing beats experience,” said Benza.

“We have used him in different positions depending on the needs of the team and the demands of the game. He has even featured at center-back, but he has still managed to lead the scoring charts.”

While Kawondera has impressed, Navaya has emerged as a serious challenger after overcoming a slow start to the campaign.

The reigning Soccer Star of the Year has been central to Hardrock’s strong debut season in the top flight, with his latest brace taking him to 10 goals from 19 appearances.

The victory over ZPC Kariba lifted Hardrock back into second place on 35 points, five adrift of Scottland.

After moving from TelOne FC during the off-season, Navaya initially struggled to reproduce the form that earned him 17 goals and last year’s Golden Boot award. However, four goals in his last two home matches have revived his campaign.

“My initial target was to reach double figures in terms of goals. Now that I have achieved that, I am now looking to match or even surpass my tally of 17 goals from last season. All credit goes to my teammates and coaches, who have always stood by me,” Navaya told Zimpapers Sports Hub.

Agyemang remains firmly in contention and believes there is still more to come from him this season.

“First of all, I give thanks to God. It’s been God since day one and my teammates here have been helping me,” said Agyemang.

“The coach (Genesis Mangombe) has always been encouraging me to do more. Even if I am starting from the bench, I have always grabbed the opportunities to play positively.

“I am expecting more this season. The fans should expect more too. I cannot say I will get the Golden Boot, but I believe in myself. If I get it, I will not be shocked. I have to continue working hard.”

With Billiat and Musona also producing consistently for Scottland, the race for the Golden Boot looks set to remain one of the major storylines of the season’s final stretch.
